Taking your child to the dentist
A good time to think about taking your child to the dentist for the first time is around their first birthday. During this first visit it is important that your child feels instantly at ease. Your child won’t necessarily be happy to show his teeth to the dentist; and we will not insist on it, giving your child time to get used to this unfamiliar environment.
During the first visit, the dentist will examine their teeth and gums. We may sometimes take x-rays, depending on the child’s age, to see if their jaw and teeth are developing properly. We will clean their teeth if necessary and the Dentist will also provide you with information on the best way to look after their teeth.
If as parents you talk positively about a visit to the dentist, then it can be a fun experience for children. Don’t tell them scary or negative stories about the visit and never use it as a form of punishment. If you are anxious yourself about the visit then please try and keep this from your child.
Your dentist plays an important role in helping your child to feel at ease in the dentist’s surgery. By taking your child to the dentist regularly they will not only develop healthy teeth but also accept these visits as a normal part of life.
